Dropshipping General Store
The shortcut: Don't open a "general store." Pick one obsessed audience (dog-agility competitors, ultralight backpackers, salt-water aquarium hobbyists) and build a brand-style storefront that solves their one problem. Generic "trending gadgets" stores have lost.
Industry: E-commerce
Investment level: Micro — $200-$800
Time to launch: 3-5 weeks to first sale
Best for: Someone willing to learn paid ads (Meta or TikTok) and treat this like an ad-buying business, not a passive store. You're a fit if you can stomach 2-3 months of negative ROAS while you find a winning product. What you'll likely make: roughly break-even to $300/month in the first 90 days, $500-$1.5K/month by month 6 if you find one product that works, $2-$4K/month by month 9-12 if you scale it. Math is in Section 4.
Market Opportunity
Most YouTube videos about dropshipping show someone in a rented Lamborghini saying they made $50K last weekend. Real math: a $30 product with a $10 supplier cost gives you $20 of gross. Ads eat $8-$15, processing takes another $1.20, and you net $4-$6 per order. That's a real business — but it's a 3-5% net margin business, not a 50% net margin one. Knowing that upfront changes which products you pick and how patient you are about scaling.
- US retail e-commerce hit $316.1B in Q4 2025, +5.3% year-over-year — US Census Q4 2025.
- Median Meta CPM (cost per 1,000 ad impressions) hit $25.22 in November 2025 before resetting to $15.74 in January 2026 — WordStream. Apparel CPM rose 50-80% YoY. Ad costs aren't getting cheaper.
- Average e-commerce ROAS (return on ad spend) is 2.87:1 — Polar Analytics. Below 2.0 most stores lose money after fees.
- Cart abandonment averages 70.22%, top reason "extra costs too high" at 39% — Baymard Institute. Bake shipping into the price.
Target customer: Hobbyist niches with disposable income and active Facebook groups. Dog-agility trainers buying jump bars. Ultralight backpackers shaving 4 ounces. Saltwater-aquarium hobbyists who spend $200/month on coral. Skip "women 25-55 who like fashion" — you can't out-spend Shein.
Why this is a good time to start: TikTok Shop's new-seller fee is 3% for the first 30 days instead of the standard 6% — TikTok Shop Seller University. If you can shoot 30-second phone videos, that's a real edge over older Shopify stores stuck on Meta.
