Plant & Succulent Shop
The shortcut: Pick one rare-plant niche (rare aroids, hoyas, or terrarium kits) and run it on Instagram + Shopify. Skip Home Depot pothos. The collectors with waitlists are who actually pay.
Industry: E-commerce
Investment level: Small — $2,000-$8,000
Time to launch: 6-10 weeks to first shipment
Best for: Someone who already grows plants well, has a spare bedroom or bright corner to use as a grow space, and is willing to package live plants on Mondays and Tuesdays only (so they ship before the weekend). You're a fit if you can take a clean phone photo of a leaf, write captions that sound like a friend instead of a garden center, and stomach the fact that 5-15% of your shipments will arrive looking sad. What you'll likely make: ~$1.5-$2.5K/month by month 4 if you nail one rare-plant niche on Instagram, $3.5-$6K/month by month 8 once you have a propagation library you're cutting from yourself. Math is in Section 4.
Market Opportunity
The houseplant hype that exploded in 2020 didn't die — it just got specialized. Generic Home Depot pothos doesn't sell online at any margin worth chasing. But a Monstera albo cutting with clean white variegation goes for $80-$300 on Instagram, and the buyer is in a Facebook group refreshing your page waiting for the post. You want that second market.
US retail e-commerce hit $316.1B in Q4 2025, up 5.3% year-over-year — US Census Q4 2025. Inside that, "plant collector" is a niche the way sneaker collectors or vinyl collectors are — small in absolute numbers, deep in willingness to pay. Look at Steve's Leaves, NSE Tropicals, Aroid Nursery — small shops, not big nurseries, all built by being the first place a specific plant shows up in stock.
Target customer: plant hobbyists 25-45 in the Facebook group "Aroid Addicts" (170K+ members) or following hashtags like #monsteraalbo and #philodendronpinkprincess. Skip "anyone who likes plants." You're selling to someone who already owns 30 houseplants and just bought a grow tent.
Why this is a good time to start: the post-2020 hype crash thinned the field. A lot of casual resellers folded. The serious collectors stayed, still on the same accounts, still hunting rare cultivars.
