Tennis Coaching Academy
The shortcut: Most new tennis coaches chase the $100 adult private lesson, when the businesses that survive past year two are built on the unglamorous truth that ranked junior families on a $300/month academy program are the recurring revenue base that makes everything else work.
Industry: Fitness & Sports
Investment level: Small — $2,000-$8,000
Time to launch: 6-12 weeks (USPTA or PTR cert + USTA Safe Play screen are the long poles; if you already hold a cert, 3-5 weeks is realistic)
Best for: A 4.5+ NTRP player (or former college player) who can run a junior group of eight 10-year-olds without losing the room, has $2K-$8K for a ball machine and court-time deposits, and is willing to text 30 tennis-parent contacts personally to anchor a junior pipeline. What you'll likely make: month 3 $1,500-$3,000, month 6 $4,000-$6,500, month 12 $7,000-$11,000. Math is in Section 4.
Market Opportunity
The first time a tennis parent calls you, they're not really asking about lessons. They're asking whether you can get their 11-year-old's UTR up by 1.5 points before next summer's sectional qualifier. That's the actual product. Adult one-off privates pay your gas money this week. The ranked junior on a year-round academy program pays your rent for the next four years.
USTA has roughly 650,000 members nationally, and around 130,000 of those are juniors 17 and under USTA overview. That junior bucket is the engine. These families are already paying for tournament entries, restringing, and three-times-a-week practice. They're shopping for a coach who knows the local sectional landscape, not someone who can teach a continental grip from scratch. Tennis participation in the U.S. sits around 23 million players post-COVID per the Tennis Industry Association.
The other thing newer coaches get wrong: they price the private lesson as the headline product and treat group clinics like filler. It's the inverse. A 90-minute junior clinic with eight kids at $30 each is $160/hour of court revenue. A 60-minute private at $80 is $80/hour. The clinic also feeds your private lesson book, summer camp, and academy pipeline — the private doesn't feed anything.
